The Only Female Boss of the Male-Dominated Sector

The Only Female Boss of the Male-Dominated Sector

Kadoil subscribed to substantial success stories ever since its incorporation. What was the secret in the background of such success?

Kadoil is at present one of the most valuable brands in the field of fuel and LPG. One of the most important factors of this success is that the foundations of the company were laid down by a family in possession of a fantastic experience and know-how in the fuel sector. The company erected on such a robust foundation, maintained at all times its team spirit, emphasized on long-term strategies rather than short-termed achievements and Kadoil brand started to be referred to jointly with the phrases “quality” and “confidence”. Ever since the day of our incorporation, we always targeted more and the better, thus grew up and enlarged our family from one day to the next. As Kadooğlu family, we are in business life for many long years. I am currently carrying the flag I took over from my father and elder brothers. I am well aware of the responsibility I am burdened with as a young woman and proud for not having failed the confidence entrusted in me by my family. We are shaping all of our strategies with our mission worded as “Reliability Alongside Your Route” and our customer-oriented organizational structure. Notwithstanding the foregoing, our most essential advantage is foresight regarding changes and executive agility. Listening to our customers, we closely trace the dynamics and trends of the sector, reinforcing our decision making mechanisms upon combining the leadership of the family with the know-how and experience of our professional executives, thereby reacting rapidly. Together with our business partners/stakeholders who are well-aware of our faith and planned growth, we are ever increasing the number of stations we are serving at, enjoying the pleasures creating new areas of enterprise jointly and organic growth through Accessing new customers.

Recently, we are witnessing the effectiveness of women is senior executive positions and associations. How do you assess this phenomenon as the sole boss of a male-dominant sector? Could it be stated that there is still quite some distance to be covered?

Fuel sector has a very masculine structure. Distribution companies, dealers and station employees and even public officials consist primarily of men. There are efforts conducted in order to enhance women representation, yet this posture of Kadoil entrusting the senior management of the company to a woman demonstrates that we are at a different position. Surely I am not the only woman in the management of the company. It is possible to see women in several critical positions of Kadooğlu Holding. I am proud to say that half of the senior executives within Kadoil are women and number of my women colleagues I celebrated Women’s Day at our headquarters exceeded the number of men. Although I am not supporting positive discrimination as a woman, taking important decisions directing Kadoil’s future together with my gender fellows, seeing to that they come to successful positions are all great factors of merriment for me. It is certain that we still have a long way to go, I believe that it should be paced ahead along such road of success, regardless of men or women. As Kadoil management, we are enabling young women to be acknowledged about this sector while still being educated and consider the fuel sector in making their professional choice. In order to increase our women employment in respect of station employees, we are generating several projects. I think that even when we provide equal opportunity to women, we shall be observing that by using their skills and know-how, they would be bringing a new breath to enterprise managements as well as the economy.

Would you please tell us about the activities you are conducting regarding Technology and R&D?

We are investing in technology in every possible area to develop our processes as well as decision taking mechanisms, reinforcing our dialogue with dealers and customers alike. Digitalization is our ultimate priority. Digital transformation has become an indispensable process for KADOİL by means of its hardware, software, data analytics as well as human resources. At present, we are equipped with an infrastructure to monitor all critical stages of the operation at our dealers, not only our terminals. We are able to follow- up and trace the purchasing frequency of our customers, including their spending amounts and routes. We are of course well aware of the fact that we could analyze such an extensive data, solely by implementing correct tools. Therefore, hereinafter we shall be focusing and concentrating our investments in this field, develop programs and orientate our brand, product-service and station investments in accordance with such data. Besides and further thereto, we are also aware of the fact that sensitivity regarding climate crisis and carbon discharge are transforming the sector. Particularly in respect of electrical cars, we are in strategic cooperation with alternative fuel Technologies and preparing our business partners/stakeholders to such new era. Likewise in parallel to the global objectives, we are also exerting effort to sustain our operations by using new/renewable energy sources. By means of the solar panels installed on the roof of our production facility at Gaziantep of surface area 19.000 square meters, we have started to produce energy in the annual quantity of 4.5 million kWh. We further started negotiations towards providing in the next period, energy of our stations from renewable energy sources as well.

Currently, electrical cars are in Turkey’s agenda. What kind of road map would you be following to this effect and what are your anticipations as Kadoil in respect of this matter?

Developments in relation with electrical cars as the most important issue concerning the oil sector… In year 2019, 2 out of every 100 cars sold were electric. Whereas our expectation for this year is that the same rate would be 15 out of 100. In parallel to the introduction of TOGG, we expect such rates in Turkey to increase as well. We arrived in three months this year, the total number of electric cars sold in Turkey last year. Increase in the number of electric motor vehicles is not solely in respect of passenger cars. Now, electric models have been developed for commercial vehicles, lorries, buses, heavy load vehicles and even tractors. In Europe, weekly 2.000 stations are being constructed and installed to cover the charging station requirements of these vehicles. China and the United States are providing major incentives in this area to both vehicle manufacturers as well as infrastructure providers. Important developments are experienced in Turkey as well regarding vehicle charge stations. Thanks to the incentives provided, we foresee that the number of sockets being around 3.000 last year would be doubled within short notice. Similarly, number of companies receiving operator license from EPDK (Energy Market Supervisory Board) has already reached 124. On the other hand, I consider that following the regulatory arrangements made in Norway, it is required to be acted in a more planned manner in selecting the locations of vehicle charging stations. For instance, following the said regulatory arrangements made in Norway, out of 10 cars sold in year 2022, 9 was either electrical or plug- in hybrid. However, in the said country, vehicles owners do not prefer fuel stations to charge their cars. In other words, Electrical Vehicle Transformation converts not only the type of fuel but also where supply is to be made at. In Turkey, the infrastructure we erected in the last 100 years for fuel- driven vehicles by spending billions of dollars is at the verge of yet another major change. Because fuel stations were traditionally designed for rapid fuel intake. Drive up to the pump, pay and leave. Whereas electrical vehicles are in need of yet another requirement: TIME. Therefore, the requirement of car owner tends to be the house, business place or Cafe rather than a station. We are referring to a sector expected to reach this year a consolidated size of TL 1 trillion, providing employment to more than 150.000 employees. Consequentially, as the fuel industry and the public administration we are in need of considering this jointly in order to comply with this new future and avoid wasting the present investments, design the future and realize such a transformation in a correct manner. What I am trying to say at this point is that in incentives to be provided for electrical charge stations, it should be given priority to the fuel stations to avoid any idleness. I think there is no need to create new channels and adventures.

Well, how are we getting prepared as Kadoil fort his coming era?

End of year 2022, we executed a cooperation agreement with Eşarj where Enerjisa Energy holds majority shares as high as 94 percent, in the field of electrical vehicle charging stations. We are erecting high speed stations and very closely following-up the purchasing frequency, location as well as timing preferences of our customers. Within framework of our cooperation, in parallel to the target of Eşarj aiming over 1.000 high speed charge station in 81 provinces of Turkey, it is targeted to be installed 100 high performance charging devices in 50 provinces. It is started to be paid visits to the stations we installed initially. Feedback received from the customers are also very positive, we hope that we could extend our network within soonest notice.

You are assuming duties as well in TÜRKONFED, Turkey’s largest independent business sector association. What are your objectives under the said association?

I can say that we are a very active family in realizing cooperation with non-government organizations. We are taking active part in Turkey’s leading non-government organizations like TÜRKONFED, TÜSİAD and TAİDER. I am actively assuming the duty of Board of Directors’ Vice- Chairman at Turkish Entrepreneurs and Business World Confederation (TÜRKONFED) as the umbrella organization of the regional as well as sector-based business world representation societies, positioned amongst the major business associations in Turkey with its effective membership structure and number spread around Turkey in general. Under TÜRKONFED, besides my role as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, I am serving on the Deepening and Institutionalization Committee as well. Here, our prioritized target comprises of improving institutional capacities of member federations under the confederation, enhance recognition of TÜRKONFED before the members and ensuring reinforcement of member loyalty, as well as increasing the number of associations under regional federations, now reaching 26.

The concept of sustainability is gaining importance and value every day in our country as well as worldwide. What are the steps taken as well as to be taken by Kadoil to this end? How do you think environmental Technologies are to be made use of for a more sustainable world?

We are acting around a common mission, not only as Kadoil, but in respect of all of our companies under the Holding. To this effect, as Kadooğlu Holding, we adopted the concept of sustainable production assuming the target of becoming an environment-friendly Corporation. The solar energy exchange at our Kadooğlu oil plant was a Project on our agenda for quite some time. By means of such energy facility investment with capacity of covering 36% of our annual energy consumption, we had the opportunity of realizing our production by the energy generated from local, renewable and environment-friendly resources. In parallel to the targets towards global sustainability, while making new investments to reduce our carbon footprint on one hand, on the other hand we are focusing on our corporate liability projects respectful to the environment as well.

What are your plans for the future?

As Kadoil, in the last months of 2022, we outscored our esteemed competitor ranking one position higher and concluded the year at the eighth position regarding market share. Entering into deals with our prestigious business partners at valuable locations, we increased our number of stations as well as visibility. In order to enable our ex-fuel products and services meet with our customers, we initiated some very essential cooperation agreements. In this new period, we shall be continuing with our projects without pressing the brake pedal. While transferring new stations, we shall at the same time upgrade, enhance and measure the service of our station network via training and such applications like secret customer. In parallel to our visibility at town centers and main highways alike, we are also targeting to increase the number of cooperation contracts that would bring extra revenues for our company and dealers. Our objective as Kadoil, is that regardless of the fuel type, while creating retail areas where requirements of both corporate and individual vehicle users are met, concurrently making up a company well-aware of its social responsibilities, preferred by its employees, stakeholders and customers alike. We hold the belief that once stepping ahead in parallel to such a target, we shall be achieving sustainable growth.

We Shall Be Building The Future Jointly

We Shall Be Building The Future Jointly

Following the earthquake disaster suffered in our country, Kadoil conducting its supportive activities in coordination with Kadooğlu Holding Crisis Coordination Center, Cemal Kadooğlu Foundation, Kadooğlu Oil employees and local administrations, is continuing with its aids to the area from the very first day of the earthquake. Kadoil is amongst those companies suffering most from the consequences of the disaster due to Kadooğlu Oil as one of the affiliates of Kadooğlu Holding, having its manufacturing facilities in Gaziantep and more than 350 of its employees residing in the same region.

Kadoil Board of Directors’ Deputy Chairman Nergiz Kadooğlu Çifçi, made a statement reading "As a woman who was born and raised in the region, it is not possible for me to express my feelings about this incredible disaster and its aftermath. Considering the destruction experienced there, unification of Turkey as a whole after the destruction to hand out assistance and aid to the region, including the heroic works conducted on site and the tragedy suffered, I find no words to express my agony and sorrow. Still, we are well aware of the fact that we should work more than ever for the region and people of the region.

Trying to balance these two feelings, from the very first moments of the earthquake, as Kadooğlu Holding and Kadoil, we exerted great effort to provide support to the earthquake-struck region and generate ideas to that effect. We first of all made sure of the health and well-being of all our acquaintances, employees and business partners. Our colleagues at the headquarters got in contact with the employees of the holding as well as affiliates in the area, received information about their health condition and requirements.

While making planning about their requirements, we also mobilized all of our means and facilities in order to meet the fuel requirements of the local people. In order to meet and cover such fuel demands received from both the public as well as the private sectors, we erected once again our station and logistic infrastructure. At this point, I would like to express my gratitude once again to all of our brave business partners, who saved their family from the wreckage and attending their work premises while they are left with no house of shelter in the area, opening their facilities within soonest notice and providing fuel for rescue and shelter/refuge operations.

As Kadoil, we are aware of the fact that it would be taking a very long process for the life in the region to return back to normal. We shall be ongoing with such donations and aids we contributed to the area from the very first day of the disaster. To dress the wounds of the deep agony burdened in our souls and enliven the region is our duty and obligation.”

While Kadoil was supplying fuel to the area as from the very first hours in order to avoid any hampering of the fuel supply to the earthquake region, further started to announce through all social media channels the list of active stations where citizens could possibly procure their fuel requirements while working at the rescue operations and seeking shelter in their own vehicles.

Kadoil family, closely monitoring the developments in the area, determined the prioritized requirements in cooperation with local administrations. Primarily led by shelter, TIR trucks carrying food, blankets, water, bread, clothing and heating materials were transferred to the region. Further, via Cemal Kadooğlu Foundation, in parallel to the requirements of the area, it is being continued with providing 3 meals a day to 5.000 people.

We changed too, we faced ourselves. We developed new business models. We benefited from the advantages of feeling the power of Kadooğlu Holding behind us. Through Cooperation of Eşarj and Kadoil, Turkey’s Electrical Vehicle Charging Station Network Is Expanding

In Kadoil, Strategic Areas Are Entrusted To Women Employees

KADOİL BOARD OF DIRECTORS DEPUTY CHAIRMAN NERGİZ KADOOĞLU, STATING THAT KADOİL’S MOST STRATEGIC AREAS SUCH AS FINANCIAL AFFAIRS AND CREDIT RISK ARE ENTRUSTED TO WOMEN EMPLOYEES, FURTHER SAYS ‘I AM VERY HAPPY TO TAKE ANY ESSENTIAL DECISIONS SHAPING AND GUIDING KADOIL’S FUTURE JOINTLY WITH OUR WOMEN COLLEAGUES AND SEEING THAT THEY ATTAIN SUCCESSFUL POSITIONS’.

Kadoil Board of Directors Deputy Chairman and TÜRKONFED Board of Directors Member Nergiz Kadooğlu Çiftçi answered our questions.

Would you please tell us about your career odyssey and place of Kadoil to this end?

In our family, career has never been perceived solely as business and thereby a stage aimed in parallel thereto. Self-development and guidance is a journey started very early. Although ı am a graduate of Yeditepe University International Trade and Business Administration, during my studentship period I incessantly undertook tasks at professional companies as well, because my family always desired that I would be assuming responsibility for our own business affairs only after being employed and getting experienced at varying sectors and corporate entities. Viewing the business we are operating with a different perspective and developing a specific viewpoint is an indispensible part of our corporate culture. Therefore, after graduating from the University, in order get experienced in international business enterprises, I continued with my education in the United Kingdom and had the opportunity of working at various trade companies. The period I lived in England was unique, where I tried to be Nergiz with limited means, without receiving support from anyone, being aware that there was no one backing me up. It was a very teaching process granting me incredible experience in my transition from youth to adulthood, getting the chance of coming together with people from different parts of the world for the same purposes. Thereafter, I returned to Kadoil, the admiral ship of the holding established by my family with all sorts of efforts. This new beginning coincided with a moment when I felt myself ready, exhilarated to enliven those I acquired while I was brought up and educated for. Despite the level of education and training, it is of utmost value to get experienced and practice whatever you see in the books. I might say that for me Kadoil is a strenuous and invaluable gemstone.

Would you please tell us about Kadoil’s corporate profile and position in the sector?

Kadoil is under organization of Kadooğlu Holding as one of Turkey’s major enterprises operating in many diverse areas ranging from fuel to food, from energy to real estate, from domestic-foreign trade to gas station operating. It is our star brand presenting quality and reliability all together in the fuel sector. We are ongoing with our journey ahead in team spirit with our employees, suppliers and customers as a whole, targeting to keep their satisfaction at top level. Our objective is to ensure that such a growth is sustainable. It is in fact a very youthful brand of the sector in general, succeeding to take position in the first 10 occupied for years by international brands. It is also included in this framework Kadogaz serving drivers of vehicles running on LPG whereas our Oil Master brand in mineral oils. With our dealers in excess of 600 particularly in respect of fuel-oil and autogas, throughout ant territory in Turkey.

How is Kadoil’s approach in respect of women employment and representation of management by women leaders?

Fuel-oil sector bears a very masculine structure. Considering both managerial positions as well as station agents, you are faced with a business model densely occupied by male employees. Sector representatives, professionals and company owners have carried out several works to attract attention to this matter. It is not hard to realize that Kadoil’s position therefor is very clear as the top position of the company is entrusted to a woman. Besides the foregoing, we have further entrusted to women employees most strategic areas of our company, namely financial affairs and credit risk departments. Despite the fact that I am against positive discrimination as a woman, I am very happy to take any essential decisions shaping and guiding Kadoil’s future jointly with our women colleagues, seeing that they attain successful positions.

What is being made by Kadoil towards creating awareness about gender equality in social as well as business life?

I have already referred to the fact that our sector possesses a very masculine dominated structure. We are enabling that young women are duly acknowledged about this sector while still being educated, so that they take into consideration the fuel sector as well while making their choices for profession. We are introducing various projects in order to increase our women employment in station service attendants. We are also a very active family in realizing cooperation with NGO’s, we are both taking active roles in activities realized by non-government organizations like TÜRKONFED and TÜSİAD, also providing support via sponsorships.

What are Kadoil’s targets for year 2023?

Despite a year of hardships, as Kadoil we had attained a level of success beyond our targets. It is our primary target to sustain this achievement in the third quarter of the year as well. We are aiming to increase our station number at town centers and favorite places, thereby coming together with our consumers at many more locations. We are desiring to meet our dealers more often, introduce all together such attempts to enhance station profitability and deal with activities under our social responsibility projects whereby more people could be contacted. We have been physically apart for a very long time, I wish to close this deficit rapidly. Let it be a year when we shall be meeting around the table and make sincere celebrations, setting sail with new and exciting journeys.

Kadoil Board of Directors Member

  1. How do you assess 2021 in respect of KadoGAZ?

2021 was a compelling process for the whole world. Due to the pandemics, close-downs, instability regarding supply and demand relation and rapid rise in prices, we passed through a process where we had to sand update our strategies, more closely following-up any developments. I am anticipating that year 2022 shall be more normalized compared to the previous years. Although the recent developments worldwide have upset certain balances, I am expecting 2022 to become a better year specific to total LPG sales.

  1. Recent energy crisis encountered around the world has likewise been reflected adversely to the energy prices as well. In your opinion, how is Turkey passing through this period in respect of pricing? Is there a policy implemented to this end by KadoGAZ?

First of all, LPG consumption as well as production is increasing worldwide. According to the reports issued by World LPG Association (WLPGA); in 2019 LPG production worldwide increased at the rate of 3.6 percent. At this point, new natural gas discoveries in America have a particular contribution to that effect. United States is in the position of world’s largest LPG manufacturer, followed by China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Canada. Recently, global LPG consumption has increased by 85 million tons. Converted to percentage, we are faced with an increase at the rate of 40%. This is very serious figure. Following our inquiries therefor, we realized that this increase shall be ongoing in the coming period as well. At present, every sector is influenced by the trend of how to create a better world, adopted by environmentalist policies. All sectors are involved with a transformation where they change their manner of doing business. As an environmental-friendly fuel, LPG is likewise assuming the share on its part from such a transformation. Taking this factor into consideration as well, it shall not be incorrect to say that LPG shall be growing ever faster compared to the past. Of course the situation in Turkey is somewhat different. In terms of consumption, we are at the second position in Europe, whereas 10th worldwide. There are nearly 4.8 million vehicles running on autogas, which corresponds to 38 percent of the total vehicle stock.

LPG pricing policy is based on two essential elements. First of these is the import price of the product, while the other is the rate of exchange of the United States Dollar. In this process, increase in the exchange rate of the Dollar caused very substantial impacts. Both representatives of the sector as well as our government applied certain reductions that would to an extent be supporting the consumer. As a company, we shall be continuing to provide support to those who prefer us. In order to sustain our aforesaid policy in arduous days, we are getting prepared to subscribe to various different projects.

  1. As Kadogaz, how did you plan your investments for the near future? Are there any investments you shall be venturing soon?

Kadogaz is operating under organization of Kadooğlu Holding, one of Turkey’s most deep-rooted holdings. It has entered this sector by making use of the know-how and experience of Kadoil, one of the leading distribution companies of the fuel sector. Ever since it was incorporated, it has increased its market share from one day to the next. This is indeed related to the power and wide dealer network of Kadoil. Concerning our service standards and quality. Despite all such adverse circumstances, we increased our market share in the past year. This is a great success. Such success is backed up by many years of business experience and solidarity exhibited by a professional team. At more than a half of Kadoil stations spread around Turkey in general, we are providing service by our LPG brand. Our target is to take this to all of our stations. We aim to be and become a brand at your closest access even when you travel to the most remote corner of Turkey.

  1. Would you please tell us about the relations of Kadogaz with its dealers and strategies towards ensuring dealer satisfaction?

Kadogaz dealers surely have the biggest share in Kadogaz arriving at its present status as well as and including such valuable Kadogaz dealers choosing the work with us for the first time. As a matter of fact, in the philosophy assumed by Kadooğlu, dealers are our most important business partners. Our business approach is based on win-win model. We come together with our dealers all the time, our dealer are at ease of contacting 7/24 any and all senior management team. Our relations with the dealers is very long-termed and following the initiation stage, it turns into a family relation. That is what makes us different. At the moment, there are dealers in business as second, third generations, acquainted with our childhood. Even in days of curfew, our dealers ongoing to provide their services under special authorization, took that service to such an extent that they brought requirements of our customers staying at home, such as bread, medications and the like. This is really a great pride on our part. Recently, because of the pandemics our means of travel are very limited, but despite this we realized a very rapid transformation jointly with our dealers. Amongst them, there were Zoom users for the first time. At this level, we had very enjoyable meetings. Previously, our dealers used to come and visit us at the headquarters, and there were even unannounced visitors so as to surprise us. Nowadays, they are making video-calls throughout the day. They have adapted to the new World order from their perspective.

  1. If not used in accordance with technical regulations and standards, LPG could be dangerous. Do you have a strategy followed in order to ensure and maintain security?

This in fact, is a serious matter monitored very closely not only by representatives of the sector, but by the government as well. Our Kadogaz tankers and dealers are continuously controlled by the authorized services, while periodic maintenance and inspection are very carefully traced and regulated.
